At a time when Ukrainian agribusiness is facing unprecedented challenges, innovation and smart resource management have become key factors for success. Optimizing costs, implementing modern technologies, and improving production efficiency are essential for ensuring the sector’s sustainable development.
More Than a Partnership: High-Quality Soil Analysis as the Foundation for Innovation
For more than ten years, AgriLab, a leading expert in soil analysis and precision farming, has been working with one of the largest and most reputable laboratories in the United States — Ward Laboratories, which has been analyzing soil, plants, fertilizers, and other agricultural products for more than 40 years.
Ward Laboratories is known for the versatility of its analytical methods and consistently high quality, making it a reliable and trusted laboratory resource for agricultural producers worldwide. Thanks to this cooperation, Ukrainian farmers have access to high-quality soil, plant, and carbon analysis services adapted to Ukraine’s soil and climatic conditions and the realities of its agricultural sector.
Ward Laboratories and AgriLab have jointly developed a unique sample quality-control system with dual control of both incoming and outgoing data. This ensures the highest possible accuracy and reliability of the results.
A Unique Approach and Results at Scale
Over the course of their cooperation, AgriLab and Ward Laboratories have developed recommendations covering approximately 3 million hectares and more than 30 agricultural crops. These include not only conventional crops but also niche crops such as vegetables, berries, and perennial orchards.
This approach enables farmers to optimize resource use, preserve soil, and increase yields.
The expertise of AgriLab is backed by the trust of more than 1,000 clients — from small family farms to Ukraine’s largest agricultural holdings. Each client receives an individual approach, tailored solutions, and support in implementing precision farming technologies.
Of particular note is that AgriLab is one of Ward Laboratories’ largest international clients and accounts for more than 50% of the U.S. laboratory’s international client base.
Nick Ward, President of Ward Laboratories, comments: “AgriLab is among Ward Laboratories’ 20 largest clients and is our largest client outside the United States. This confirms the high level of trust and the value of cooperation between the two companies. It also clearly demonstrates the strong confidence of Ukrainian farmers in AgriLab’s technologies and data, as well as the company’s significant influence in the market.”
Yaroslav Boiko, CEO of AgriLab, emphasizes:
“Our cooperation with Ward Laboratories is an example of the synergy between science, technology, and agricultural production. Ukrainian farmers gain access to the best tools for improving production efficiency, based on highly accurate soil analysis. This makes it possible to optimize resource use and make agriculture more profitable and sustainable.”
Precision Farming Innovations: Trends and Prospects
When asked about precision farming technologies, Nick Ward notes:
“Grid soil sampling continues to be an important part of precision farming, particularly for fertilizer application. Drones help identify problems during the growing season, and this trend will continue over the next five years. However, soil analysis remains the only way to plan for the long term. Soil sensors are trying to make an impact on the market, but they still require physical work in the field, and their results are based on regressions, so they cannot replace traditional soil analysis.”
Carbon Programs: The Future of Sustainable Agricultural Production
When asked about the prospects for carbon programs, Nick Ward responds:
“Carbon markets continue to evolve. Currently, the trend is moving toward carbon ‘calculated premiums.’ This means that grain grown in the field carries a carbon credit, which the end consumer pays for through a premium price for the grain. However, this approach is still new, and accurate yield tracking and record-keeping on farms are critical for its successful implementation.”
Shared Achievements and New Opportunities
The innovative partnership between AgriLab and Ward Laboratories is helping advance precision farming in Ukraine, opening up new opportunities for sustainable and efficient agricultural production.
In particular, as part of the AGRO project supported by USAID in 2024, Ukrainian farmers were given the opportunity to access high-quality soil analysis at the U.S. laboratory on preferential terms.
They also received a four-stage consultation on implementing efficient and precision farming practices. This enabled them to manage resources such as fertilizers, seeds, and crop protection products more efficiently, mitigate weather-related risks, and significantly improve the efficiency and economic performance of their agricultural businesses.
The cooperation between AgriLab and Ward Laboratories is a compelling example of how the synergy of science, innovation, and practical experience can create new horizons for Ukrainian agribusiness.
